Jonas Akerlund's grimly compelling dramatisation of a real-life music scene whose aggressively nihilistic aesthetic spilled over into fatal acts of violence.

A teenager's quest to launch Norwegian Black Metal in Oslo in the 1980s results in a very violent outcome. Lords of Chaos tells the true story of True Norwegian Black Metal and its most notorious practitioners - a group of young men with a flair for publicity, church-burning and murder.

Did You Know? From 1983 to 1984, director Jonas Åkerlund was a drummer for the Swedish metal band Bathory, which inspired some of the Norwegian Black Metal bands of the 1990's which are focused on in this movie. He stated in a 2018 interview that when Black Metal culture developed in the 90's and become "too serious", he left the music scene and moved on to film-making.
